Pharmacy Service is available to all patients 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

STAFF

The Pharmacy Department at NWGH & RC is responsible for dispensing medications daily for an average of 1500 patients. The Department consists of highly qualified competent staff including 03 Senior Pharmacists, 32 Pharmacists, 34 Pharmacy Technicians, 02 Pharmacy Purchase Officers and 08 support personnel who work together to assure patients receive the highest quality pharmaceutical care possible.

PURCHASING, INVENTORY CONTROL & STORING

In order to serve the patient through proper medication management system, Pharmacy department keeps vigilance on the quality-based & cost effective procured medicines directly through their approved vendors.

Pharmacy & Therapeutic Committee is at better position for making decisions regarding drugs, quantity required, product specification and source of supply.

OUT PATIENT SERVICES

Through Out-patient services, Department of Pharmacy Services caters ambulatory care patients of NWGH as well as from outside the hospital by providing them the quality assured medicines against the prescription through patient counseling by registered pharmacists. A wide variety of brands are available however on request of Consultants, specific brands can be arranged to optimize patient satisfaction and to meet specific needs and demands of OPD patients. The important features of Patient Counseling is to educate the patient about the dispensed medication, it’s safe usage, storage, right time of administration, side effects, drug - drug and drug - food interaction etc.

IN PATIENT SERVICES

In the Indoor and Ward Pharmacies we follow the International Standard Policy which is a Unit Dose System. It provides round the clock medicine supply to admit & day care patients at their bedside against clinicians’ orders under the supervision of registered pharmacists. For safe, accurate and quick delivery of medicines to the admitted patients in wards, Pharmacy runs Computerized Medication Order Processing System which processes and delivers medicines to the right patient, right drug, right dose, right time, right route and right expiry for efficient therapy management.

OT Pharmacy

Services provides safe, accurate and efficient delivery of medications and other Pharmacy items in Operation Theaters. Department of Pharmacy’s top most priority has been provision of quality services in OT area that includes quality pharmacy items, timely available, proper storage as per standard recommendations, controlling expiry etc.

ONCOLOGY PHARMACY STERILE I/V ADMIXTURE SERVICES

Oncology Pharmacy is a well equipped and observe the same safety instructions which is internationally required. These Cytotoxic drugs are prepared in Laminar Flow cabinet. It provides accurate and ready to administer sterile I/V Chemo medicines to the admitted and daycare patients in the hospital.

EDUCATION & TRAINING SERVICES

We have a comprehensive Hospital Pharmacy Clerkship program for fresh Pharm-D graduates from various Universities of the KP. It includes establishing an understanding about Pharmacy Practices and Pharmaco-Therapy. Since inception in 2009, the program has successfully trained well above 467 pharmacists

DRUG INFORMATION & POISON CONTROL CENTER

The hospital-based DIC perform various activities which include answering the in-house calls, participate in drug use evaluation, coordinate adverse drug reaction reporting and publishing newsletter, provide service education, assist in Pharmacy & Therapeutic committee, and oversee investigational drug activity including,

1) Information about drugs to health care professional like Indications, dose calculations, Contra-Indications, side effects etc

  • Poison Control Centre (prevention & management) It will provide information regarding poison management in case of common household poisonings, occupational exposures to various chemicals, and information on supportive treatment in case of hospital admission.

Drug Information Bulletin

The centre is publishing a PHARMACY BULLETIN for transmission of information to the health care team on monthly basis. Hours of Centre: The Centre is open every business day Monday to Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

QUALITY CONTROL LABORATORY

Laboratory Objectives
  • To ensure the availability of quality medicines and safeguard patient health by monitoring quality of medicines available within the hospital
  • To set up a standard as a state of art laboratory in the area of quality control and consequently to meet international standards

Pharmacy Policy and Procedure Manual & Documentation as per ISO guidelines ... a standardized system-based approach to develop Policies & Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for standardization of work in different areas of pharmacy.

Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Service & Patient Counseling ... a program in which quality assured medicines are dispensed / sold against a valid prescription through patient counseling.

Inpatient Pharmacy Services and Medication Management System provide safe, accurate and efficient delivery of medications at patient’s bed side.

Oncology Pharmacy Sterile IV-Admixture Program ... provides accurate and ready to administer sterile IV-chemo medicines to the admitted and daycare patients in the hospital.

Drug Information Services including documentation and monitoring is available to answer all medicines related queries to clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, patients and other paramedic personnel inside and outside the Hospital.

Drug Evaluation Program evaluates & recommends the inclusion of quality and cost effective medicines to P&T Committee for inclusion in the hospital drug formulary.

NWGH Drug Formulary... is designed to reduce the inventory cost, and to provide continuous availability of quality and cost effective medicines to the patients.

Pharmacy Extemporaneous Compounding Services ... provide different required combination and dosage forms of medications which are commercially not available in Pakistan.

Pharmacy & Therapeutic Committee (P&TC) is an advisory group of Consultants from various departments of the hospital which recommends the policy to hospital administration on all matters related to the use of medicines within hospital and its clinics. P & T Committee also performs the duty of Drug Evaluation Committee (DEC) recommends the addition/deletion, safety, quality and cost effective medicines in the hospital drug formulary.

FUTURE PLANS:

CLINICAL PHARMACY SERVICES (Point of Care Pharmacy)

The goal of Clinical Pharmacy Services is to ensure patient safety parameters. Pharmacists will visit and review all medication orders in the patients’ profiles and provide professional recommendations to clinicians about the medicines, their doses, their interaction with other medicines, duration of therapy, lab reports etc. Proper monitoring of medication therapy by pharmacists on daily basis enhances the quick care and cure of the patient which results in timely healing of the disease, which highlights the cost effectiveness in therapy to the patient. Pharmacists will be available to reply any medicine-related queries from clinicians (such as medicine dosage, renal dose adjustment, choice of therapy, etc) as well as the nursing staff (such as drug reconstitution and dilution, administration, rate of infusion, etc).

NWGH Chain Pharmacies will be offering a full line of pharmaceutical services to patients/customers.
