On August 28, 2024, the Medical Professional Education Department (MPED), in collaboration with the Department of Endocrinology at Northwest General Hospital and Research Centre (NWGH&RC), successfully conducted a one-day workshop titled “Innovative Approaches in Type II Diabetes: The Role of Empaphage L.” This workshop was organized for postgraduate trainees and trainee medical officers (TMOs) specializing in Medicine and Allied fields.

The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Dr. Arshad Hussain, a renowned endocrinologist and expert in diabetes management, alongside Dr. Nizam Uddin, Senior Registrar in the Department of Endocrinology. They shared the latest insights into managing Type II Diabetes, with a specific focus on the emerging role of Empaphage L, a novel therapeutic agent.

Diabetes affects over 537 million adults worldwide, with Type II Diabetes representing approximately 90% of these cases. In Pakistan, the situation is similarly concerning, with over 33 million adults living with the disease, making it one of the top five countries with the highest diabetes prevalence. This workshop aimed to address the urgent need for innovative treatment approaches for this widespread condition, especially for medical professionals who play a critical role in managing diabetic patients.

The interactive session included a dynamic Q&A segment, allowing TMOs to discuss various clinical challenges and solutions in diabetes care with the speakers. This discussion offered valuable learning opportunities and underscored the importance of staying current with advancements in diabetes management.

This workshop represents a significant step in MPED’s commitment to continuous professional development, ensuring that medical professionals are well-equipped with the latest knowledge and tools to provide optimal patient care. The department anticipates hosting similar educational initiatives in the future.
