Symposium on “Bempedoic Acid”

On Wednesday, October 30, 2024, the Medical Professional Education Department (MPED) at Northwest General Hospital & Research Centre (NWGH&RC) in Peshawar hosted an insightful symposium titled “Bempedoic Acid: A New Frontier in Managing Hyperlipidemia and Cardiovascular Outcomes.” The event brought together healthcare professionals and medical trainees to discuss the therapeutic advancements of Bempedoic Acid, particularly its role in cardiovascular health management.

Dr. Hamid Mahmood, Consultant Cardiologist, led the session, focusing on recent clinical trials that highlight Bempedoic Acid’s effectiveness in lowering LDL cholesterol levels. This is especially relevant for patients who are intolerant to statins or require additional lipid-lowering therapy. He presented key findings from the CLEAR Harmony and CLEAR Wisdom trials, which demonstrated Bempedoic Acid’s significant impact on reducing LDL levels while maintaining a favorable safety profile. Additionally, Dr. Mahmood discussed the CLEAR Outcomes study, which investigates Bempedoic Acid’s potential to reduce cardiovascular events, providing valuable insights into its long-term benefits for heart health.

Prof. Dr. Ahmad Fawad, Senior Consultant in the Cardiology Department, shared his perspective on the significance of these clinical findings. He emphasized the need for innovative therapeutic approaches in treating high-risk cardiovascular patients and noted that integrating Bempedoic Acid into clinical practice could transform the management of hyperlipidemia and enhance patient outcomes.

Prof. Dr. Arshad Hussain, Vice Dean of MPED, praised the organizing team for their efforts in hosting this symposium, highlighting the importance of educational initiatives in advancing medical knowledge. He reaffirmed MPED’s commitment to fostering professional development and encouraged the continuation of similar knowledge-sharing events to improve healthcare practices across the region.
