Advocating for Traumatic Brain Injury as a Notifiable Condition

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a growing public health issue in Pakistan, driven by road accidents, occupational hazards, and violence. Designating TBI as a “notifiable condition” would require reporting all cases to health authorities, allowing for better tracking and management.

Northwest Pakistan has formed a global coalition with countries like Canada, the UK, and South Africa to advocate for a World Health Assembly resolution to make TBI notifiable.

Dr. Neil Wetzig and Franco Servadei emphasized the importance of joint strategies for TBI prevention, while Mr. Saud Khan, Chief Traffic Police Officer of Peshawar, and Dr. Mohammad Ayaz Khan, Director General of Rescue 1122, highlighted their roles in reducing TBI.

Mr. Basit shared his personal story as a TBI patient, recounting how he was struck by a motorbike at the University of Peshawar in 2023. His experience underscored the devastating impact of TBI and the urgent need for preventive measures.

With road traffic injuries being a leading cause of TBI, making it notifiable would improve data collection, support targeted public safety measures, and strengthen traffic laws and public health campaigns.
