Ramadan and Diabetes

On February 4, 2025, the Medical Professional Education Department, in collaboration with the Endocrinology Department of NWGH & RC Peshawar, organized a one-day symposium titled “Ramadan and Diabetes.” The event was led by Prof. Dr. Arshad Hussain and featured expert insights from Dr. Aqil, Dr. Nizam Uddin, and Dr. Ayesha.

The symposium highlighted the critical importance of managing diabetes during Ramadan, particularly given that 26.3% of adults in Pakistan are living with the condition. Speakers emphasized the risks associated with fasting, citing alarming statistics on fasting-related complications among diabetic patients. A significant percentage experience hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, underscoring the need for pre-Ramadan counseling and medication adjustments. However, only 44.1% of diabetic patients consult their physicians before fasting, leaving many vulnerable to serious health risks.

The speakers stressed the need for enhanced awareness campaigns to address common misconceptions about diabetes and fasting. They urged healthcare professionals to prioritize patient education and proactive engagement to ensure safe fasting practices.

Overall, the symposium aimed to empower diabetic patients with the knowledge and strategies necessary to maintain optimal health while observing Ramadan.
