Northwest Peshawar hosted the G4 Alliance conference and an international seminar on “Preventing Spina Bifida through Folic Acid Fortification in Pakistan.” The event brought together experts, policymakers, and the public to address Pakistan’s high spina bifida rates.
Professor Dr. Gail Rosseau from George Washington University highlighted the need for global policies to prevent spina bifida. Dr. Sidra Jabbar Khan emphasized the vital role of folic acid intake and fortification in reducing risks, especially in high-incidence areas like South Punjab.
Dr. Sumera Shams advocated for implementing the National Food Fortification Act 2016, while Ayesha Bano, Former MPA, called for targeted awareness campaigns involving Lady Health Workers.
Mr. Muzzamal, a spina bifida patient, shared his personal struggles, underscoring the need for collective action to prevent this condition.
The seminar called for urgent steps, including legislation, public-private partnerships, and awareness efforts, to safeguard future generations from this preventable disease.
